ABSTRACT:
The terms "big data" and "data science" became buzzwords in the enterprise world and are now part of the machine learning vernacular. This talk is about trying to make sense of what are the essential aspects of what is going on behind this buzz, and is primarily inspired by my personal learnings over the past 2y while working with customers trying to solve business problems in the enterprise environment. This talk will not present research results but rather propose a way to think about what "big data" and "data science" mean, as well as define which are some major conceptual problems in the area, the extent to which they are being addressed or neglected, and how they connect with foundational philosophical questions. Disclaimer: this is a philosophically oriented talk.
