ABSTRACT:
The advances in information technologies and healthcare industry have brought the advent of Smart Healthcare, in which computer-aided biomedical image analysis plays a pivotal role. Image segmentation, which aims to delineate the regions or volumes of interests in imaging data, is widely recognised as the bottleneck of automated image analysis, and hence has attracted huge research attention in the image processing community. This presentation focuses on statistical image segmentation techniques and introduces several segmentation approaches that were designed according to different principles, such as minimising segmentation error, maximising likelihood probability and maximising posterior probability. The assumptions on the data generating process involved in those algorithms are also discussed. Finally, the application of statistical segmentation approaches to the delineation of major brain structures in dual-modality PET-CT images is presented.
BIO:
Dr. Yong Xia was awarded the B.E., M.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xiaan, China, in 2001, 2004 and 2007, respectively. After PhD, he joined the Biomedical & Multimedia Information Technology (BMIT) Research Group at the School of IT, the University of Sydney. Since then, he has been actively engaging in and significantly contributing to a number of academic and administrative activities, such as projects application and implementation, guest lecturing, student supervision, research coordination, and industrial research engagement. Dr. Xia has published 52 academic papers, inducing seven 7 ERA Ranking A+ journal publications. Some of his research achievements have been successfully applied to research and engineering projects to solve real problems, which have led him winning the prestigious Scientific and Technological Awards of National Defence, Chinese Computer Federation Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award and the nomination of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of China. Dr. Xia has been invited to participate in the organisation of many international conferences and has served as the reviewer of several top academic journals, such as the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology and Pattern Recognition.
