ABSTRACT:
The Driver Mental State Monitoring (DMSM) projects addresses road safety by going beyond the detection of driver distraction, and identifying mental states at risk. Our working memory is very limited, so driving while being preoccupied, frustrated or simply daydreaming can have dire consequences. The project intends to capture behavioural (posture, speech, eye gaze) and physiological (sweating, EEG, pupil dilation) signals from drivers and use machine learning to build models of safe and unsafe mental states, that can be implemented in cars. There are many theoretical and practical issues to address: from task design, to validity of simulator-based results, this talk will touch upon a few of these, and give an update on the current progress.
