ABSTRACT:
Achieving optimum energy savings in commercial buildings is a rising challenge to industry in a carbon-constrained economy. Amongst different uses of electricity in commercial buildings, HVAC dominates the building electricity demand. The occupantsa HVAC usage is largely dependent on their activities. There have been significant research efforts on studying the occupant flows and their comfort level in commercial buildings in order to understand the occupancy behaviors and predict their usage patterns. We believe that appropriate scheduling of occupantsa activities in commercial buildings helps to proactively control the HVAC operation, leading to energy savings in the buildings. Meeting scheduling is one practical approach to strategically control occupancy flows and optimize HVAC utilization. Conventionally, meetings are scheduled manually via a centralized appointment system based on individual and room availability. However, given the goal to minimize energy consumption, automated scheduling based on HVAC zones and meeting properties is seen to be a promising area of research. The talk will give a preliminary introduction on the motivations and the background of the research topic. including a discussion on HVAC modeling and its impact to meeting scheduling.
